It's the male to female crossplays that usually get stranger looks from the crowd. I understand why and I'm actually fine with it.
I've been asked quite a lot in my years of cosplaying why I like to dress up as a girl at times. I was never able to give a definite answer back then. I suppose it was because I wasn't aware of why I did such a thing.
One reason would be that sometimes, I really just like the character's design. It's a hobby of mine to create things, and being able to materialize something I love makes me happy.
However now I believe I found the core reason of why I do it. Lately I've been delving deeper into doing more complicated costumes such as Capt. Jack Sparrow. In doing those, I realised that it's all about the transformation. Being a costume enthusiast ever since I was little, I've always found a certain joy in being able to turn myself into all sorts of characters. This carried over into my adulthood and I wanted to challenge myself even more.
